Phase 3 - Preparation

Complete an Assessment:
All planters must complete a church planter assessment.

If you have been assessed by another certified assessor within the past year, SBTC will probably accept it. Please let us know by email whom assessed you and when and send us a copy of the assessment report.

If you have not been assessed yet, SBTC staff will send you the information you need for you and your wife (if married) to complete the PLACE assessment online.

Accepted assessors include:
Other State Conventions, if you are currently out of state
    Local Associations
Through a local church’s church planting ministry
Through a church planting network or para-church ministry

Have a Follow Up Interview with SBTC Staff:
After the Assessment is completed and submitted, an SBTC staff member will contact you for either a telephone or face to face (preferable) interview to discuss the assessment. This normally takes about 2 hours.

Complete Church Planter Training:
If you have not completed an approved training, you MUST complete the SBTC Basic Training Journey. This is a three day workshop experience designed to prepare you, the planter, your spouse and up to 3 core leaders for the missioinary task you have been called to.  This training experience will guide you through the development of a planting proposal.

This training MUST be completed before you can attend the SBTC Planter Orientation. Click here to see a list of upcoming Basic Training events.

If participating in the personal Basic Training Journey Experience is not possible for you, please contact us to discuss other options.   Email churchplanting@sbtexas.com or call Barry Calhoun or David Alexander at 817-552-2500.

SBTC will also accept Church Planter training from qualified organizations, including:
Other associational based training
Other network or para-church ministry training
Specialized church planter tracks, such as Cowboy Church, Country Church, Mulithousing, Organic Church, Missionary Planter

All prospective planters must submit a church planting proposal.
This proposal consists of your Vision, Mission Statement, Core Values, a description of your target focus group, evangelism strategies, leadership development (discipleship) strategies, and proposed budget. You may download and use this document as a guide..
